Is Almond Butter Vegan?
Simply put, yes! Almond butter is vegan. However, that doesn’t mean that all almond butter is created equal. Often times popular or less expensive brands of almond butter contain palm oil, some form of sugar, and salt. The palm oil helps so you have a smooth and uniform product (so no or less of an oil layer on the top) and the sugar helps keep the oil smoothly blended but also Americans have a fascination and deep addiction to sugar and sweet foods (oftentimes without even realizing it). Palm oil is usually sourced from the palm oil plant that contributes to environmental degradation as many rain forest acres are cut down for palm oil trees. These palm oil forests destroy the habitats of many animals and also the farming industry increases greenhouse gas emissions. Many vegans are vegan because they are concerned about animal welfare and/or the environment. Therefore, choosing almond butters with palm oil would not align with those values. The good news is that there are plenty of almond butter products out there that are vegan and do not contain palm oil. So you can nourish your body with healthy fats and protein from the almonds without negatively impacting the environment. Some of my favorite palm oil free almond butters are (in no particular order): 365 Everyday Value Almond Butter, Kirkland Signature Almond Butter, and Spread The Love Almond Butter. There are a few others out there, but these all have a deep roasted nut flavor that I personally prefer (instead of the raw almond butters). The ingredients are simple – almonds or almonds and salt – and you’re choosing a product that will naturally be made in smaller batches as nut butters made with palm oil can be made in much larger vessels. Everyone is different, but I think you will enjoy these vegan almond butters.
When it comes to sugar….not only is it unnecessary in almond butter, sometimes the source of sugar in almond butter is honey. As you know, honey is made from bees and is not considered vegan although there are many plant-based eaters who still eat honey as it is metabolized the same way as sugar. So if you are a dedicated vegan, you’ll definitely want to steer clear of the almond butters made with honey as they wouldn’t be vegan. However, some vegan almond butters will still contain a source of sugar, which is great if you love sweet things but honestly, it contributes additional calories and takes away from the deep roasted almond flavor.
