Ahhh, Fritos….the beloved corn chip that has danced across the nation for more than 80 years …whether it’s in a “Frito Pie” or accompanied a barbecue, this crunchy salty chip is iconic to say the least. Just about everyone in the United States could tell you about Fritos shape, size, taste, and texture….but could they tell you if it was vegan? That’s what I’m here to help you out with!

Are Fritos Vegan?

Because Fritos have been around for more than 80 years, they are one of the chips on the market with the smallest ingredient list: corn, corn oil, and salt. BAM! That’s it! So does that mean that Fritos is vegan? Yep, you bet! Not an lick of an animal product in the straightforward 3 parts the ingredient list.

However, not all the Frito flavors are vegan. While the traditional Frito corn chip is vegan, there are other Frito flavors that are not. See below for the vegan Fritos and non-vegan Frito flavors.

Vegan Frito Flavors

  • Original
  • Lightly Salted
  • Fritos Scoops

Non-Vegan Frito Flavors

  • Classic Ranch
  • Honey BBQ
  • Flammin’ Hot
  • Chili Cheese
  • Spicy Jalapeno
  • Flavor Twists Honey BBQ

So go ahead, and make your own variation of a vegan Frito pie, vegan nachos, or simply snack on Fritos! I will say that as a dietitian, I can also tell you that Fritos are higher in fat than other chips (10 grams in Fritos compared to ~6 grams in other chips) which may be why they taste so good to so many Americans but that doesn’t mean that just because it’s vegan you can consume with throwing any caution to the wind. It’s still a good idea to practice moderation even with a vegan food such as Fritos as it’s still high in salt and fat and not meant to be an everyday kind of food. Does that make sense? With that being said, buy your Fritos today and top your next chili with this iconic vegan chip!
