Bobo’s Oat Bars started when a mother and daughter duo from Colorado starting baking one rainy afternoon. At the time, mom, Beryl was trying to get her catering business going but couldn’t resist some quality mother and daughter time. The duo continued to spend time baking the oat bars when the local community couldn’t get enough of them. The oat bars started to fly off the shelves and before long, the Bobo’s Oat Bar business was born.

Since their humble beginnings in 2003, Bobo’s Oat Bars has grown considerably and is not only offered nationwide but offers three different product lines including Bobo’s Oat Bars, Bobo’s Stuff’d Bars (stuffed with peanut or almond butter) and Bobo’s Bites (mini bites). The gluten free, vegan products remain wholesome, hearty, and simple. The company still relies on small batch cooking and the original recipe the mother daughter duo created.

The oat bars are available in fifteen flavors including Original, Coconut, Cranberry Orange, Banana Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon Raisin, Peanut Butter, Almond Butter, Peach, Maple Pecan, Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip, Lemon Poppyseed, Apple Pie, PB + J, and Gingerbread. Keep reading to see what I (a plant-based vegan Dietitian) and my husband (a non-vegan omnivore eater) think of the Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar we’ll be reviewing today and available on Amazon.

Taste Experience

The Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar is less fragrant than some of the other Bobo’s Oat Bar flavors I’ve tried but it still smells oaty and wholesome. I didn’t smell any coconut, almond, or chocolate but I see small chocolate chips (more like mini chocolate chip size) sprinkled throughout the bar.

My first couple bites did not contain chocolate chips or almonds. Although the bar was tasty and similar to the original oat bar, it took a few solid bites before I got any of the chocolate chips or almonds. Because of that, I wouldn’t go for this flavor if you’re hoping for a decadent rich chocolate treat. However…if you like hearty, chewy oats and a nutrition bar that tastes like real homemade food, this is your bar. I’m actually quite amazed at how Bobo’s manages to keep the bars tasting so homemade on such a large scale. It’s quite impressive. I mean, I love to bake and I don’t even always make granola bars or snacks that taste this wholesome and tasty! Plus, the best part with Bobo’s is that I don’t have to spend my time trying to! I can pick up a box of Bobo’s Oat Bars on Amazon and have a homemade but totally nutritious and satisfying snack anytime (literally morning, noon, or night). It’s pretty fantastic, don’t ya think??

We must talk about the serving size first. Bobo’s Oat Bar comes in a single unit wrapped package but the the serving size is half the bar inside that single wrapped package. Now, I don’t know about you but if something is wrapped in what looks like a single serve package, I will likely eat the whole thing. This is completely fine and reasonable if you’re hungry but maybe not as great if you have any glucose sensitivity. Just something to keep in mind.

So in a half a bar you’ll find 190 calories (so 380 calories in the whole bar) with only 80 of those calories coming from fat. There are nine grams of total fat with five grams of saturated fat from the coconut oil. The gluten-free Bobo’s Oat Bar is vegan so it does not contain cholesterol. The oat bar is also heart healthy in that there are 60 milligrams of sodium in half the bar (120 mg in the entire bar).

There are 26 grams of total carbohydrate in half the bar (52 grams of carbohydrate in the entire bar) with 3 grams of fiber in half the bar (6 grams of fiber in the whole bar). As the main ingredient is oats, we would expect to see a higher amount of carbohydrates but the awesome part is the fiber content that not only helps minimize blood sugar impact but also helps keep you full and satiated compared to foods that do not contain fiber. I would say that for most of us, Bobo’s Oat Bars in the Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip flavor are a great snack or on-the-go breakfast option.

Half of the Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar has three grams of protein (from the oats). The entire bar has six grams of total protein which could easily be increased by pairing the bar with nuts or spreading a layer of a nut butter on top of the oat bar.

Oats incredibly nutrient dense and in each Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar you’ll find 4% of your calcium needs for the day and 12% of your iron needs for the day. Bobo’s Oat Bars do not add additional protein, vitamins, or minerals to their products but rather rely on wholesome and healthy ingredients. If you’re looking for a straightforward, no non-sense nutrition bar (especially as a breakfast option), consider Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bars on Amazon.
