Bobo’s Oat Bars started in 2003 after an afternoon baking session turned into a business idea. At the time, Beryl was trying to get her catering business going but soon realized that the oat bars that she and her daughter created were so tasty and wholesome that she started to sell them in local coffee shops. The company has now grown considerably but remains committed to small batch cooking and that recognizable homemade quality taste.

Since Bobo’s inception, the company has now grown to offer 3 different oat bar product lines nationwide. Bobo’s offers Bobo’s Oat Bars, Bobo’s Stuff’d Bars (stuffed with peanut or almond butter) and Bobo’s Bites (mini bites). Today we’ll be looking at the original product, the Bobo’s Oat Bars in the Chocolate Chip Flavor. Bobo’s Oat Bars are available in 14 other flavors including Original, Coconut, Cranberry Orange, Banana Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon Raisin, Peanut Butter, Almond Butter, Peach, Maple Pecan, Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip, Lemon Poppyseed, Apple Pie, PB + J, and Gingerbread. Regardless of the flavor, the gluten free vegan oat bars remain just as healthy and wholesome as the original bar Beryl and her daughter, Bobo, created in 2003.

Keep reading to see what I (a plant-based vegan dietitian) and my husband (a non-vegan omnivore) think of the Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar. Or…if you want to see what other’s are saying, head that way.

Taste Experience

As with the other chocolate chip infused flavors I’ve tried (Banana Chocolate Chip and Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip), the oat bar does not smell particularly chocolate-y although it does smell quite pleasant and slightly sweet. It smells like toasted grains with an hint of coconut (from the coconut oil).

Also similar to other chocolate type flavors of Bobo’s Oat Bars I’ve tried, the Chocolate Chip flavor lacks an abundance of chocolate chips. The morsels are more like mini chocolate chips and you will definitely not get a taste of chocolate in every bite. So, if you aren’t too big into chocolate but you want just a little taste, this would be a good flavor for you.

The Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar would also be a great option for breakfast since it’s not super sweet but offers just a little hit of something sweet to start your day. Unlike many sugary breakfast cereals, pastries, and bars, the oats in the Bobo’s Oat Bars truly standout and you’ll quickly notice that this is unlike any other oat based bar. It’s wholesome and hearty while being soft and chewy (not sticky like some of those super syrupy ones).

The best part (I think) is the homemade taste, texture, and overall experience. Their trademark is: “No one brings you home like Bobo’s.” and boy oh boy is that ever the truth! The homemade flair makes these bars not only taste amazing but really it’s why I choose Bobo’s Oat Bars over other bars any day.

Nutrition

Serving size first! Bobo’s Oat Bar comes in what appears to be a single serving package but the the serving size is half the bar. I don’t know about you, but if a food of any kind comes in what looks like a single serving, I will eat the whole thing more than likely. I think most people do; it’s just human nature. This is not a problem but rather just a point of interest as you may consume more calories than you’re expecting.

In half an Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar there are 190 calories (380 calories in the whole bar) with only 70 of those fat calories (most of the calories are coming from the first ingredient: oats). There are seven grams of fat with five grams of saturated fat from the coconut oil. Bobo’s Oat Bar is vegan so it does not contain cholesterol (only animal based products contain cholesterol). The gluten free vegan oat bar only has 85 milligrams of sodium in half the bar (170 mg in the entire bar).

There are 28 grams of carbohydrate in half the oat bar (56 grams of carbohydrate in the entire bar) with 2 grams of fiber in half the bar (4 grams of fiber in the whole bar). Some of the other flavors of Bobo’s Oat Bars have more fiber, likely because there are more oats where the Chocolate Chip Oat Bar has chocolate chips which definitely do not contain fiber. I do think that if you are eating a Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar for breakfast, you would benefit from more fiber and I would recommend pairing the bar with a handful of almonds or scooping out some nut butter with the vegan oat bar. If you are consuming the Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar as a snack or dessert, don’t worry about adding additional fiber.

Half of the Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar has three grams of protein (from the oats). The entire bar has six grams of total protein which could be increased the same way you could increase the fiber content – by pairing the bar with nuts or spreading a layer of a nut butter on top of the oat bar. This would help keep you sustained and satisfied if you don’t have time to eat again for a few hours.

Oats are incredibly nutrient dense. Like other flavors, each Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bar has 4% of your calcium needs for the day and 12% of your iron needs for the day. Bobo’s Oat Bars do not add additional protein, vitamins, or minerals to their products but rather rely on wholesome and healthy ingredients to provide stellar nutrition. If you’re looking for a wholesome hearty nutrition bar without the fluff, definitely consider Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Oat Bars.

The Non-Vegan Review

I think my wife is pulling a fast one on me – these bars do no taste like a “healthy vegan treat.” They taste like something I’d want to eat all day everyday! Bobo’s Oat Bars don’t have any of that weird protein chalky taste. In fact, they taste like a snack my grandmother would make. I’ve taken these bars to work for breakfast and also on work travel and I’ve been **shocked** at how filling they are. I’ll have one at 8am and won’t get hungry until 11:30am/noon when usually after having a vegan nutrition bar or vegan protein bar for breakfast, I’ll get hungry at 10am. This extra time means that I can focus on other tasks and keep operating at a higher level. So, yes, Bobo’s Oat Bars taste amazing but I like that they actually keep me satisfied and taste like a homemade treat! If Bobo’s Oat Bars sound up your alley too, purchase them here (hey wifey, please order more here 🙂 ).
