Nature’s Path makes many plant-based cereal products – everything from breakfast cereals to cereal bars to granola to oatmeals and waffles. The whole grain products are predominately vegan with a few products including honey as a sweetener. Heritage Flakes is one such product. The breakfast cereal does not contain any dairy or other animal products other than a trace amount of honey. Some vegans consume honey as it is metabolized the same as sugar while others who are vegan for animal rights issues may not include honey. We are still going to review this product today but if you’d like to check it out without reading the review, you can find it HERE.

Taste Experience

Each evenly toasted flake of Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes has specks of lighter colored millet and dabs of oats. Each flake is perfectly crunchy – definitely crunchier than a corn based cereal like a corn flake but not quite as crunchy as grape-nuts. When I let the flakes sit in unsweetened almond milk, it seemed as thought they all held their texture but did soften within the first few minutes and weren’t quite so crunchy but didn’t get soggy even after sitting in the liquid for 10 minutes. That to me seemed pretty impressive and shows the true heartiness of whole grains!

Aside from the crunchy whole grain taste, there’s a slightly sweet earthy taste to this whole grain vegan cereal. It’s no where near as sweet as Frosted Flakes, Honey Bunches of Oats, or any of those traditional big box cereals. Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes is a wholesome company that makes hearty, organic, whole grain, vegan products and you can tell in the taste. It’s sweet but not too sweet where a hefty dose of blueberries, peaches, or another fruit wouldn’t make it too sweet.

Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes is a great cereal on its own because it’s packed with so much grainy goodness but it also would be great mixed into other breakfast cereals for your morning cereal or even your snack. Find yourself some Nature’s Path Organic Heritage Flakes cereal here and treat yourself to this whole grain hearty vegan goodness!

Nutrition

Each cup of Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes has 160 calories with only a gram and a half of fat per serving (this helps keep the overall calories lower as well). Each serving of this vegan whole grain cereal has 170mg sodium – a respectable amount that helps add to the overall taste in a good way.

Heritage Flakes contains 31 grams of total carbohydrate per serving with a whopping seven grams of fiber per serving. This fiber will help keep you full and satisfied but it also helps to promote a healthy gut microbiome and strengthen your immune system. An increased fiber intake is probably the number one thing Americans need to focus on when it comes to improving overall wellness. Fiber from fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, and whole grains has incredible benefit for the body and overall digestion. So, starting your day with seven grams of fiber from whole grains in this vegan cereal is a great boost to your overall fiber intake – aiming for at least 25 grams of fiber per day for most healthy adults.

Because Heritage Flakes is made with whole grains, there is also 5 grams of plant-based protein from the wheat, oats, spelt, and quinoa – talk about a whole grain medley that’s power packed! Plus, each serving only has five grams of added sugar – much much MUCH lower than many mainstream commercially prepared cereals. Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes is absolutely one of the healthiest breakfast cereals out there – pick some up today and replace your current breakfast cereal with a hearty and healthy whole grain option the whole family will enjoy.

Parting Thoughts

Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes may not be 100% vegan with the addition of honey, but it is one of the lowest sugar, most nutrient dense breakfast cereals out there with 7 grams of fiber and 5 grams of plant-based protein per serving. Not only are Heritage Flakes nutritionally packed, but they taste amazing – perfectly sweet, super crunchy (but not so much that it’ll crack a tooth), and full of that earthy whole grain taste that’s missing in many breakfast cereals. Have you tried vegan Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes?? If not, you’ll wonder what took you so long after you take your first blissful bite of this vegan cereal. Get yourself some of this whole grain goodness!

Love this cereal. So tasty! I’d actually be ok with less added sugar too.

I started eating Heritage Flakes about a month ago and found that they keep me feeling full for nearly five hours. I love the taste and crunchiness and that they are low in sugar.
