Daiya has been making vegan cheese since 2008! Can you believe it??! To say that Daiya vegan cheese is one of the originals is an understatement. Daiya cheese was the first of its kind to be so super melty and stretchy – perfect for those grilled cheeses, burgers, and other cheesy bites of goodness. Although it’s been around for awhile, you may still be wondering what it tastes like or what it’s like in general. Or you may be wondering if it’s for you if you’re new to the vegan cheese world. Today we’re going to be reviewing Daiya mozzarella style shreds. Continue to read on or check them out HERE.

Taste Experience

Daiya mozzarella cheese shreds are thicker than traditional shredded cheese but they don’t stick together at all (you know what I mean with the real cheese… ). Upon tasting it cold, it tastes like a whole lot of nothing really. It’s a bit salty and is thicker than shredded cheese but doesn’t have that sour bite like cheese can have. Daiya mozzarella shreds are best heated on pizza or melted on a casserole. If you add too much cheese, it has a tendency to have a “sticky” texture but with a little bit, it gives pizza that gooey mouthfeel you can only get with cheese that has enough fat. Daiya vegan cheese doesn’t like grease piles though like real cheese. It still doesn’t have a sour bite to it when heated but it does taste more cheese like when heated, and still has a salty pop. It doesn’t brown completely or as quickly as regular cheese and you’d likely burn your food by the time the cheese would brown, so don’t anticipate that happening!

Overall, Daiya mozzarella vegan cheese shreds tastes enough like cheese for even omnivores just as long as you don’t use a large portion that makes it extra sticky and totally takes away the cheese quality. Check out what others have to say about Daiya Mozzarella Style Shreds HERE.

Nutrition

Each 1/4 cup serving of Daiya Mozzarella Shreds Vegan Cheese contains only 80 calories (full fat dairy cheese has double this) with only 5 grams of total fat. That means that there is enough fat for a tasty mouthfeel but not so much fat that it leaves you feeling heavy and sluggish. Of the five grams of fat, there is 2.5 grams of saturated fat from the coconut oil which is the third ingredient.

The sodium content is comparable to dairy cheese with Daiya vegan cheese having 220mg of sodium per serving – this is what makes it taste so good and taste the most like cheese. Unlike dairy cheese, there is carbohydrates in Daiya mozzarella shreds as tapioca starch is the second ingredient and is in part what makes it hold it’s shape so it doesn’t melt into a puddle with only coconut oil. There is no fiber or sugar in the vegan cheese shreds and essentially no protein with only 1 gram of protein per serving.

Calcium is added like in dairy cheese so Daiya Mozzarella Shreds are actually a good source of calcium with 10% of your calcium needs for the day!

Parting Thoughts

Daiya Mozzarella Shreds are a great vegan alternative to cheese that melts and bubbles – perfect for pizza, grilled sandwiches, and warm casseroles. Because the flavor is enhanced when warmed, it’s recommended to consume daiya vegan cheese melted (although this is not required and many people like it cold tossed into a Italian pasta salad or something!). Daiya Mozzarella vegan shreds are a healthier option with straightforward ingredients (no artificial colorings or preservatives).
