When it comes to the world of vegan cheese, there are more and more options available everyday it seems. Which is great….but also…how do you know which one is the best with all of that competition?? Luckily for you, I’ve been vegan for over 10 years and as a plant-based registered dietitian, I know a thing or two about nutrition and tasty vegan cheese.
Cheese has many properties and things you’d expect or want to have happen in a vegan alternative…does it bubble? Does the vegan cheese melt? Does the vegan cheese brown? Does the vegan cheese have that mouthfeel?? Those questions and so many more – afterall – cheese is what most vegans or predominately plant-based eaters miss the most. So when it comes to grilled cheese, you need a vegan cheese that will do all of those things – that melty, gooey, stretchy cheese with plenty of mouthfeel. So I’ve lined up the best vegan cheese options for a crunchy, warm, delicious grilled cheese!
5 Best Vegan Cheeses for Grilled Cheese
What We Love: Miyoko’s Creamery uses simple, straightforward, plant based ingredients without any fillers or artificial fluff. Based on cashews and live cultures (plant derived) to create the tang of cheese, it’s the most natural option out there. It doesn’t stretch well in a grilled cheese but does get bubbly. Check out Miyoko’s Creamery Mozzarella HERE.
Considerations: While the ingredients are simple, Miyoko’s tastes the least like cheese. So if you’re looking for something that tastes just like traditional cheese, keep working your way down our list. However, if you’re looking for simple ingredients, Miyoko’s vegan cheese is a great grilled cheese option.
What We Love: Most vegan cheeses come in mozzarella and cheddar, but 365 Everyday Value Smoked Vegan Gouda Cheese Slices offers up something different and unique to add a more artisanal touch to your vegan grilled cheese. It melts and stretches similar to Daiya (which is why is has a similar ingredient) but doesn’t have a strong taste. Check out 365 Everyday Value Smoked Gouda Vegan Cheese HERE.
Considerations: This product is made in Greece, which is pretty cool, but that also means you’re paying for transportation costs to get to the United States which is not the most environmentally friendly move – however the cheese is tasty and truly great for a grilled cheese.
What We Love: Violife has a sharper cheddar like taste than many other vegan cheese options out there. It does melt and stretch well for a grilled cheese but if you’re using it to get brown, it doesn’t get as browned even though the ingredients are similar to Daiya cheese and the 365 vegan cheeses. Find Violife Vegan Cheese HERE.
Considerations: Violife is on the pricier end but does taste very comparable to cheddar – so if you are looking to indulge, Violife may be the winning vegan cheese for your next grilled cheese.
What We Love: Daiya has been around since 2008 (although not popularized until later), which means that it is a plant-based vegan cheese original! Even though the slices weren’t quite the same back when they started, Daiya Dairy Free Cheddar Slices are great in any type of grilled cheese or burger with just enough salt and mouthfeel to make you start to wonder if you’re eating real cheese or an alternative. Find Daiya Vegan Cheese HERE.
Considerations: Although the texture and taste is the most like real cheese, Daiya vegan cheese slices do have the longest ingredient list with various gums and binders to help create the optimal taste and effect.
What We Love: Similar to the Daiya vegan cheese, Chao tastes unbelievably good. Chao vegan cheese stretches and melts the absolute best when it comes to grilled cheeses. In fact, Chao has more flavor when heated as in a grilled cheese versus eating it when it’s cold. It’s hard to be disappointed with this cheese though! Check out Charo cheese HERE.
Considerations: Chao vegan chees is another one on the pricier end but if you’re wanting the real deal vegan grilled cheese that is restaurant worthy, without a doubt, Chao is going to be the best vegan cheese pick!
Do you have a favorite vegan cheese for grilled cheese?? If not, definitely check out one of the above cheeses as they are truly amazing – they melt well, taste fantastic, and are all cruelty free!
