Best Nest Wellness has a line of vitamins and supplements that primarily target the prenatal and postnatal periods with multivitamins and single vitamins/supplements like DHA and Vitamin D. While many women know the importance of taking a prenatal vitamin and do so regularly, not all women take a vitamin in the postpartum phase. Or, some women continue taking the same prenatal they took while pregnant. As a plant-based registered dietitian and new mom, I’ve done a lot of research on the best vitamin for me and my baby in this phase of life (currently exclusively breastfed at the time of this posting). One of the vitamins I came across was Best Nest Wellness’ Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin. This multivitamin provided an array of nutrients that are needed in the postpartum phase of life. I’ve gone through many of the nutrition specifics below but if you want to check out Best Nest Wellness Mama Bird Postnatal Vitamins for yourself, check them out HERE on Amazon.

Nutrition

The vegan Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamins are gluten free and free of soy, yeast, fish/shellfish, sugar, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, nuts, GMOs, dairy/lactose and are made in the U.S.A. So with all of that alone, you know you are starting off on the right food with a quality multivitamin during this vulnerable period in your life.

The Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin has over 25 vitamins and minerals with key vitamins and minerals needed during the postnatal and/or breastfeeding period including:

Vitamin A from beta-carotene is a fat soluble vitamin that is needed for healthy development of eyes in babies but also in mamas. In one serving of Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin, you’ll find 92% vitamin A in the beta-carotene form (needs to be converted to the active form in the body).

Vitamin D is also a fat soluble vitamin and is recommended for both mamas and babies (vitamin D drops with 400IU). Vitamin D helps with bone health, mood, and other functions in the body and is usually an animal derived vitamin but the lichen as in Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin is 100% plant-based and vegan. There is 10mcg or 67% RDA of vitamin D.

Methylfolate is the form of folic acid in Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin and is a higher quality, more bioavailable form of folate. Many vitamins do not contain this form as it is more expensive but some people have an inability to convert non-methylated forms of folate. If this is the case, that means that you would not be absorbing the folate in the multivitamin. However, because Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin is methylated, it is easily absorbed and digested. Each capsule contains 600 mcg or 100% folic acid.

Similarly, methylcobalamin is the form of Vitamin B 12 used in Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin and is also methylated for easier absorption. This is especially important if you are predominately plant-based or vegan as Vitamin B 12 can only be consumed via animal based foods or supplements such as Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin. Each capsule contains 178% RDA (5mcg) of Vitamin B 12.

Iron is essential for red blood cells, oxygenation of the body tissues and many other biological functions. Each serving of Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin has 18mg or 67% of the RDA. If you eat a vegan or predominately plant-based diet or you are anemic, you will need to supplement with additional iron.

Zinc is also incredibly important if you eat a primarily plant-based or vegan diet as the highest concentrations are in animal based products (although there is zinc in nuts, seeds, and whole grains). There is 115% or 15mg of zinc in each Mama Bird Postnatal vitamin – which is huge not only for vegans and plant-based eaters but zinc also helps support your immune system mama so you can be healthy for your little one!

Many of the B vitamins are over 100% of the RDA in each Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin which is crazy important as your metabolism creates milk if you’re breastfeeding and even if you’re not – I don’t know a mama who’s not tired!

In addition to the vitamins and minerals, Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin uses natural sourced ingredients (so the color can vary from capsule to capsule. The vitamin is gentle (including the source of iron used) and is perfect for anyone who has a tender tummy. If you need a gentle multivitamin, the Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin also contains ginger to help soothe. There’s also an enzyme blend to help with digestion – which is great if you suffer from constipation – which can occur in many breastfeeding mamas. There is also spinach and kale – so you’re working on getting small amounts of greens in!

There are so many fantastic vitamins and minerals in this multivitamin specifically formulated for mamas and in my eyes, even more so for mamas who tend to gravitate towards a more plant-based diet. Check out Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin HERE and see what others have to say about it.

Parting Thoughts

If you’re looking for a once daily multivitamin and you’re breastfeeding or in a postpartum period, Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin packs in a nutrition punch! This gentle multivitamin is easily digestible and absorbs well to help support your mood, energy, sleep, focus, and memory while living your best mama life. It is recommended that you would still take a separate DHA supplement but in general, Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin supports a nutritional foundation for your lifestyle – particularly if you are a plant-based mama as the ingredients are 100% vegetarian/vegan – even including the vitamin D. Mama Bird Postnatal Multivitamin is the multivitamin I recommend to postpartum women regardless of their diet because of the wide spectrum of vitamins and minerals provided in combination with high quality, easily digestible nutrients.
