Bobo’s Oat Bars started with humble beginnings in 2003 with a mother and a daughter who baked up a bunch of oat bars and then started to distribute them to local coffee shops. The oat bars became so popular within the community that Bobo’s became a full-time business for mom, Beryl, and before she knew it, Bobo’s grew to the immense following it has today!
With simple but wholesome and healthy ingredients, Bobo’s continues to offer homemade baked taste in an easily accessible package for those on-the-go moments or busy days. The vegan products are straightforward without extra ingredients plus the oats and bars are gluten free, organic, and non-GMO. Beyond the traditional Bobo’s Oat Bars, the company has also launched Bobo’s Stuff’d (stuffed bars with peanut or almond butter) and Bobo’s Bites.
Bobo’s Oat Bars are available in Original, Coconut, Cranberry Orange, Banana Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon Raisin, Peanut Butter, Almond Butter, Peach, Maple Pecan, Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip, Lemon Poppyseed, Apple Pie, PB + J, and Gingerbread. I love unique flavors so we decided to give Lemon Poppyseed sounded fun so we (myself, a vegan dietitian and my husband, a non-vegan omnivore) decided to try it out. Holy hearty lemon balls! I think this might be my favorite Bobo’s Oat Bar. I love lemon but I also really love the earthy goodness of whole grains. This oat bar my dear friends combines the best of those two worlds! Usually I inspect/smell/look at the bar thoroughly before biting into something but not this time. I was completely thrown off guard at how amazingly homemade and lemon-y this vegan nutrition bar smelt that I just dove right in.
It looks like mini golden brown oat bread or banana bread with tiny specks of poppyseeds. Unlike many baked goods and baked treats that are a huge sugar bomb and leave me feeling like crap, the Lemon Poppyseed Bobo’s Oat Bar is refreshing and energizing. I don’t feel like I had a ton of sugar and because the oats are gluten free, it settles well for me without bloat or any unpleasant GI issues related to gluten.
If you like the flavor of a lemon poppyseed muffin but you’d like a bar or snack that is more wholesome and hearty, the Lemon Poppyseed Bobo’s Oat Bar is your jam. Find a box on Amazon and start looking forward to nutrition bars!
As with the other Bobo’s Oat Bars, the serving size for the Lemon Poppyseed Bobo’s Oat Bar is half a bar. Now, if you look at the packaging, it looks like a single serving sized package. If you are concerned about carbohydrates, sugar, or overall calories, it’s important to be mindful of of the serving size and comparing that to what you are actually consuming. A whole Bobo’s Oat Bar is a great overall choice, but just keep in mind the serving size can be a bit misleading. …because let’s get real…how could you not eat the whole bar in one sitting?!
In half of a Lemon Poppyseed Bobo’s Oat Bar there are 190 calories (so 380 calories in the whole oat bar) with only 60 of those calories coming from fat. This means that the oats provide the bulk of the calories (which is a good, healthy thing). There are seven grams of fat and four and a half grams of saturated fat. Coconut oil is the third ingredient and what provides most of the saturated fat.
There are 28 grams of total carbohydrate in half the bar and 56 grams of carbohydrate in the entire bar. I find that for most people, 56 grams of complex carbohydrates (from oats primarily) as part of a meal can be a great choice perhaps with additional protein or fiber to keep you full longer. Or, consider eating the bar on its own after a higher intensity workout. Plus, keep in mind that Bobo’s Oat Bars started out in coffee shops and are more of a homemade treat with real ingredients than a protein powder-y bar with a “perfect” nutrition label but a ton of chemicals and additives.
Each Lemon Poppyseed Bobo’s Oat Bar has 4 grams of fiber in the whole bar. Fiber helps keep you full, regulate your blood sugar level, and the soluble fiber in oats can help reduce the risk of heart disease.
The Lemon Poppyseed Bobo’s Oat Bar has six grams plant-based protein in the entire bar. The protein comes from the real food ingredients like organic rolled oats. It’s funny because we don’t usually think of oats as a protein source but whole grains (including oats) can be incredibly nutrient dense and a great source of plant-based protein!
Along with providing fiber and protein, oats contain several essential vitamins and minerals. In each Lemon Poppyseed Bobo’s Oat Bar there is 4% of your calcium needs for the day and 12% of your iron needs for the day. Because the iron in this vegan bar is non-heme (basically coming from a plant), to increase the iron absorption, eat the Bobo’s Oat Bar with a navel orange, kiwi, or strawberries. These foods are all high in vitamin C to help increase the iron absorption.
So not only do the Lemon Poppyseed Bobo’s Oat Bars taste like a diving refreshing treat, they have wholesome nutrition to help you energize and refuel your body. Check them out on Amazon; you won’t be disappointed.
The Non-Vegan Review
I’m a big fan of Bobo’s oat bars. No other bar has the staying power that a Bobo’s bar has. I can eat one of these for breakfast and be satisfied all the way until lunch. Not many bars can say the same thing. I’m also a big fan of anything lemon flavored and Bobo’s doesn’t disappoint in that department. These Bobo’s Lemon Poppyseed bars have a nice strong lemon flavor that will give you a little zip in your morning routine. Really nice, real tasting lemon flavor. The poppy seeds are a great complement to the lemon flavor and reminds of me eating a lemon poppy seed pound cake, which I love. I think I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, I think Bobo’s makes the best breakfast bar, not only because of their staying power, but because of the wholesome ingredients and the great soft, but slightly grainy texture. They are the perfect bar to pair with coffee, tea, or juice in the morning. Buy these on Amazon and upgrade your morning routine. Enjoy! Non-vegan husband out!
