If you’re a new vegan, you’re feeding a vegan for the first time, or you’re just curious…you may be wondering…is wheat bread vegan??
Is Wheat Bread Vegan?
The simple answer is that it’s not so simple! Turns out that wheat bread can vary considerably among manufacturers and while generally speaking wheat bread tends to be vegan, there are some manufacturers that use honey or milk derived products in their wheat bread loaves.
So how can you be sure if what you’re eating or buying is vegan?? The only sure way to know is on the ingredient list. Here, you can look under the allergy warning first …does the bread say that it contains milk or egg products? If so, that wheat bread (or other bread) is not vegan. From there, start to scan the ingredient list and look for honey as this would not be listed on the allergy warning but honey is not considered vegan. If there is no honey or other animal derived ingredient, you’re looking at a vegan loaf of whole wheat bread.
Now, just because a product is vegan doesn’t mean it’s super healthy for you. This is also the case with wheat bread (or any bread for that matter). When choosing a whole grain bread, you want at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. Sometimes the wheat used doesn’t contain the entire wheat kernel and you lose precious fiber that is good for digestive and heart health. You also want a vegan whole wheat or multigrain bread that contains very little added sugar. Some sugar is necessary to help the yeast rise (literally feeds the yeast) and activate the chemical reaction that happens when baking bread – so don’t look for sugar free here because it’s just not going to happen. And if it does, that will be a terrible tasting bread!
Because there are so many bread options out there, I wanted to give you my favorite healthy and vegan bread choices below:
Food for Life Sprouted Breads – Food for Life makes some incredible products – all of which you can find in the freezer section of most grocers as they do not contain any preservatives. You can also see there products HERE. I recommend keeping the bread in the freezer for best results but while you try the high fiber, high protein bread, also try their english muffins – especially if you like hearty whole grains…they are phenomenal!
Alvarado Street Bakery Organic Sprouted Bread – Similar to Food for Life and Dave’s Killer Bread, Alvarado makes incredible orgainic, non-GMO, and sprouted bread products like these HERE. The products contain minimal sugar, oil, and salt without any preservatives or weird/funky/non-vegan ingredients.
