As a Plant-Based Registered Dietitian working with vegans and vegetarians, many busy professionals are confused about vegan snacks. Today, we’re diving into the best vegan snacks to bring to work in terms of nutrition, taste, and of course all while saving the animals and the environment.
Perhaps your office doesn’t provide snacks. You may or may not have a fridge to store food in. Yet, when it’s 10:30am and you’re hungry, none of that matters because you need satisfying food – fast.
Today we’re going to dive into my top 5 favorite vegan snacks to take to work that don’t require refrigeration or prep time. I’m all about making your own granola or bars as a snack but sometimes that’s insanely unrealistic given time, family, life responsibilities. So rest assured, these are all options that fit the bill of vegan and health without sacrificing your time or taste.
5. That’s it Apple + Coconut 100% Natural Real Fruit Bar
What we love: That’s it bars are the purest form of a fruit bar compared to any of the others out there and if you’re all about simple ingredients and you have a 3pm sweet tooth at work, this Apple + Coconut That’s it bar is a fantastic option. With only 2 straightforward ingredients, 110 calories and a couple grams of fiber, these fruit bars are great to keep at work for a fridge free snack. Buy That’s it Apple + Coconut HERE (note, that’s our favorite flavor but there are other flavors too!).
Considerations: There is only one gram of protein in each That’s it bar and this may not be enough sustained nutrition depending on how hungry you are. If you find yourself more hungry, I suggest pairing the That’s it Apple + Coconut Fruit bar with nuts or one of the dried bean options below.
4. Off The Eaten Path Chickpea Veggie Crisps with Real Purple Sweet Potatoes
What we love: Off the Eaten Path Chickpea Veggie Crisps are your at work snack when you feel like potato chips either with your lunch or as a snack and you want something healthier without sacrificing taste. These crisps are deliciously subtle in flavor and heartier than a regular potato chip but not as hearty as a typical “health food cracker.” With 4 grams of fiber and 5 grams of plant-based protein, these crisps are different than most in that they will help keep you full longer while satisfying that salty crunch. Nosh on them HERE.
Considerations: If you really want a potato chip, eat the potato chip. We can’t force foods to be different than what they are and what they provide. However, if you have a salt tooth and want something crunchy and salty later in the afternoon at work, Off the Eaten Path Chickpea Veggie Crisps are a great option in providing a healthy option that will help keep you satisfied until dinner time.
3. Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edamame, Sea Salt
What we love: Dry roasted edamame snacks are a great addition to a workplace soup or a lousy lunch that needs a more satisfying crunch that’s also high in protein. With 11 grams of plant-based vegan protein, the roasted edamame snacks help eating vegan and healthy easy in the workplace. Edamame is a great natural source of calcium and iron to help fill in the nutritional gaps during your day at work. Buy Dry Roasted Edamame HERE and enjoy vegan snacking done well.
Considerations: Unlike the roasted broad beans that you’ll see below, edamame has a distinctive taste. Similar how you may notice subtleties between black beans and pinto beans, edamame has a unique plant quality to it as well and can be a great snack to feed your gut microbiome.
2. Square Organics Vegan Protein Snack Bars – Nut Butter Chocolate Coated Combo
What we love: The chocolate nut butter combination in these Square Organics vegan protein snack bars is one of the most authentic “tastes like dessert” but has the nutrition profile of a balanced, healthy food. This combo Square Organics flavors in this package are chocolate coated, so they won’t handle being in the heat of your car…but a chilly office building when 3pm sweet tooth/hunger hits?? GOLD. Square Organics are my favorite bars when I need an instant pick me up in the office but I don’t have the time to nosh on whole foods or I want a bit more protein (each bar has 10-13 grams of plant-based protein). Side note: these are the best textured vegan protein bar in my opinion. I also love them because unlike many vegan protein bars that are large in size, these little nuggets easily store in drawers or cubbies at your desk. Just be sure to hide them from your coworkers cause if they try it, they might try to steal yours. 😉 Buy Square Organics Vegan Protein Snack Bars on Amazon in the Nut Butter Chocolate Coated Combination box and honestly consider a couple boxes because you will go through these things like hot cakes for not only a work snack but dessert or crumbled on top of yogurt because they are so delicious and versatile.
Considerations: At $2.00 – $2.50 per bar, Square Organics Chocolate Coated vegan protein snack bars may not be the most economical option but depending on your current habits, it can still make a lot of sense. For example, if you are buying regular vegan chocolate bars as a snack, you’ll pay at least that and you won’t have the protein or MCT oils to help keep you satisfied and nourished. So yes, you may be paying more for the Square Organics bars on the front end, but once you taste and see the high quality ingredients, you won’t go back to another chocolate vegan protein snack bar and your health will thank you for it. It was a close call between best vegan snack number 2 and 1, so definitely still check out the Square Organics bar on Amazon.
1. Enlightened Bada Bean Bada Boom Roasted Broad (Fava) Bean Snack by Enlightened
What we love: The Enlightened Broad Bean snacks are crunchy, salty, and equally satisfying and nourishing. With a whopping 7 grams of plant-based protein and 5 grams of whole food fiber, these crunchy snacks will keep you satisfied in between meetings, or if you need to add a little something to your meal. I love the 100 calorie packs to easily stash in my laptop bag if I have work meetings outside the office and because the beans are so crunchy, they won’t get smashed nor do they require refrigeration. Enlightened beans are a great work place snack that I encourage you to buy HERE on Amazon with the single serve variety pack to really amp up the ease and variety.
Considerations: If you find a flavor you love (I personally dig the sriracha and the sea salt roasted broad bean crisp), I would suggest buying the larger bags to keep in your desk drawers to save cost and packaging.
