Vega has been creating plant-based nutrition products since 2001 when triathlete, Brendan Brazier, wanted nutritious foods that would help elevate his performance. However, he wanted plant-based products that still tasted amazing. Over the years, Vega has launched protein powders, meal replacement powders, workout recovery powders, hydration powders, snack bars, protein bars, and supplements. Vega products are easy to find here on Amazon and highly popular among plant-based eaters. Given the growing popularity of plant-based products, I suspect Vega will likely continue to be a leader in the plant-based nutrition world.

One of the most popular products is the Vega All-In-One Nutritional Shake that you can find on Amazon here. The plant-based vegan shake powder has been adapted over the years and currently comes in eight favors. The vegan protein powder comes in eight flavors including Mixed Berry, Chocolate, Coconut Almond, French Vanilla, Mocha, Natural, Natural Unsweetened, and Vanilla Chai. I really enjoy using protein powders blended into smoothies, so I opted for the tropical flavor, Coconut Almond. … Keep reading to see if the Vega All-In-One Shake measures up in overall taste and nutrition. And as always, check out my husband’s invariably entertaining non-vegan review!

Taste Experience – 8.5 out of 10

Like any plant-based protein powder, the Vega All-In-One Coconut Almond Vegan Shake Protein Powder can be mixed into water, plant-based milk, or blended into a smoothie. I do not like any plant-based vegan protein powder mixed solo in water or in plant-based milk, but I decided to trial a scaled down sip of this Vega product. The plant-based protein shake mixed with water resulted in a fairly gritty texture with tropical notes of coconut and pineapple – it’s as if I was drinking a very watered down pina colada. When mixing the Coconut Almond Vega All-In-One Shake with unsweetened almond milk, it did stir more evenly and tasted like a creamy but slightly gritty pina colada. Both sips were not sweet, which I appreciate that Vega’s All-In-One Coconut Almond does not have artificial sweetness or overly sweet undertones.

The ultimate taste experience was when I blended the Vega All-In-One Coconut Almond Vegan Shake Protein Powder into a smoothie with banana, mango, an orange, and spinach for an extra boost of long-lasting nutrition. The vegan protein powder looked fairly gritty and chunky but when blended into a smoothie, it was smooth and creamy (especially with the banana and mango). I barely noticed any protein powder texture or taste but could definitely taste the real coconut flavor. The tropical taste was refreshing and just the right amount of perk for a breakfast (the smoothie would also be great for a quick meal on the go). I only used a half a scoop of the protein powder to start and while it doesn’t leave an aftertaste, I do notice it leaves me thirsty afterwards (turns out there is 240mg of sodium in a full scoop – see nutrition section below for more details) and I probably wouldn’t do a whole scoop of the plant-based protein powder.

I enjoy the overall neutral protein powder undertones; I cannot taste a significant amount of a particular type of protein and it mixes into a morning smoothie well. Some vegan protein powders smell like grass, weeds, or dirt. Vega All-In-One Shake smells (and tastes!) like a refreshing zesty burst of the tropics and you can find it right here on Amazon.

Nutrition – 10 out of 10

I love that Vega’s All-In-One Shake Vegan Powder moves beyond the protein. The company says they are focused on whole body nutrition and performance and it shows up on the nutrition label and ingredient list for the All-In-One Shake Powder! You won’t find any artificial flavors, colors, additives (like MSG), or artificial sweeteners (like aspartame). The vegan protein powder is naturally gluten-free and soy-free. Overall, the ingredient list includes whole foods and plant-based powders made from real ingredients to help nourish your body.

Each plant-based protein scoop has 160 calories with only 45 calories coming from fat. This tells us that most of the calories are coming from protein and whole carbohydrates, not fat. Indeed, there are only five grams of total fat. The high quality plant-based fat sources are mostly from the flaxseed (second ingredient) and the hemp protein (sixth ingredient).

There is significant discussion about the reformulation of the All-In-One Shake and the increase in the sodium content. The old product contained around 40 milligrams of sodium per scoop while the new product contains 240 milligrams of sodium per scoop. For the average healthy and active adult, this is not going to be a huge deal. Most healthy adults need less than 2300 milligrams per day according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans or less than 1500 milligrams per day according to the American Heart Association. If you’re using the vegan shake powder as a meal replacement, this would fit into a healthy diet. Also, if you are a healthy adult and using the protein powder in a smoothie with high potassium fruits (oranges, bananas, kiwi, mango, papaya, etc), the sodium-potassium pump aka your electrolyte balance will be more likely in equilibrium.

You will find ten grams of total carbohydrates per serving with six grams of fiber and only one gram of sugar. This is a low amount compared to most plant-based and vegan protein powders, which makes it a great option for a diabetic or anyone concerned about carbohydrate intake. This is also great if you plan on using the powder in a smoothie with a lot of fruit – it will help keep the total carbohydrate amount down while providing adequate fiber to stabilize blood glucose levels.

The greatest part of the Vega All-In-One Coconut Almond Shake is the protein content. With a whopping 20 grams of protein per scoop, this protein powder competes with all the mainstream whey protein powders but blows them out of the water with more nutritionally dense ingredients and cruelty/animal free.

Vega All-In-One Coconut Almond Shake Powder has over 50% of more than 12 vitamins and minerals per scoop. As you can see from the nutrition label below, there’s a significant amount of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Biotin, and Pantothenate. Interestingly, Vega does not isolate the vitamins and minerals and add them back into the vegan protein powder. Instead, the micronutrients are naturally present in the whole food ingredients. This means that while there are vitamin and minerals we can measure, there are a whole slew of other phytochemicals and nutritious compounds within the whole food ingredients themselves. Essentially, when you buy Vega All-In-One Coconut Almond Shake Powder on Amazon, you are getting more nutrition than meets the eye. Also included in the plant-based powder is over one billion CFUs bacillus coagulans per scoop to promote digestion and a strong immune system. Plus, it keeps going…one scoop of the protein powder contains 1.5 grams of plant-based ALA Omega-3 fatty acids (from the flaxseed). Essential fatty acids play many roles in the body including promoting heart health and reducing overall inflammation.

The Non-Vegan Review – 6 out 10

So, take my review with a grain of salt, because I’m just not a big fan of protein powders. Like most protein powders, this Vega coconut almond protein powder is not very good when mixed with just straight water. It’s extremely sweet and all of the powder settles to the bottom if you don’t drink it quick. Yes, I’m probably doing it wrong, and I should have listened to my wife, the lovely carrot slayer she is, and mixed this Vega protein powder into a smoothie, but in the name of vegan science, I wanted to try it water only. The verdict is don’t mix this in just water. Definitely mix it into a smoothie. I will say that the Vega coconut almond protein powder does have a nice coconut flavor. Non-vegan husband out.
