Are Caveman Bars Vegan?

Yes! The Caveman “Nutrition” Bars are vegan. The company does not promote a vegan label on the packaging though. My guess is that it would turn off the paleo meat eaters that tend to lean towards the Caveman products. However, these nut and fruit based bars are vegan and come in 4 fantastic flavors: Dark Chocolate Cherry Nut, Dark Chocolate Almond Nut, Dark Chocolate Caramel Cashew, Dark Chocolate Cashew Almond.

Today, we’re going to take a deeper dive into the Dark Chocolate Cherry Nut and review it’s taste and nutrition from me (a vegan dietitian) and my very non-vegan husband. If you came here to check out the bars on a larger scale, head to Amazon and you’ll find more information about these “accidentally vegan” bars.

Taste Experience

Do you like almonds? Do you like cashews? Do you like sunflower seeds? Do you like dried cherries? Do you like chocolate? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you’re going to love the Vegan Dark Chocolate Cherry Caveman Nutrition Bar! It’s choke full of large almond and cashew pieces but pressed together with dried cherries and raisins and without a ton of added sweetness. If you think Larabars are too sweet, this is a great step down.

The chunky nutty flavor is complemented so well with the tang of the dried cherry and then the subtle creaminess of the chocolate coating. It reminds me of a luxurious trail mix but pressed together in a handy dandy portable snack bar. Ingenious.

If you have a hankering for some real food snack bar, not some weird protein powder concoction, the Caveman Dark Chocolate Cherry Nutrition Bar needs to be added to your shopping list on Amazon!

Nutrition

Each Caveman Vegan Dark Chocolate Cherry Nutrition Bar has 200 calories from whole foods with 100 of those calories coming from fat (thanks to the large amounts of satisfying nuts). You can also thank those heart healthy nuts for providing 11 grams of fat but only 2.5 grams of saturated fat and no trans fat. If you’re looking for a more satisfying snack, the Vegan Dark Chocolate Cherry Caveman Nutrition Bar fits the bill.

You’ll find only 85 mg of sodium, which is considerably less than many competitor vegan snack bars and certainly less than most protein bars. As a dietitian who constantly preaches reducing sodium in most people’s diets, I’m excited to see a lower sodium snack bar that is still nutritious.

The vegan snack bar has 21 grams of carbohydrate with 2 grams of fiber and 13 grams of sugar. Most of the carbohydrates and sugar are found naturally in the dried cherries and raisins but the bar does add some sugar in the light chocolate drizzle. I would like to see a bit more fiber but with the substantial amount of fat (and protein) from the nuts, this still makes a great afternoon, post workout, or mid morning snack choice.

The almonds, cashews, and sunflower seeds provide 4 grams of protein per Dark Chocolate Cherry Caveman Nutrition Bar which would be enough as a snack for most of us. The bar doesn’t contain added vitamins or minerals but the whole food ingredients provide 6% of your iron needs for the day and 4% of your calcium needs for the day. Check out the vegan Dark Chocolate Cherry Caveman Nutrition Bars on Amazon for some whole food snacking goodness.

The Non-Vegan Review

Wow! Another great Caveman vegan bar. My first bite and I hit a nice plump cherry in the middle. Just delicious. A little sweeter than some of the other Caveman bars, but really tasty. Great texture too. Soft, but with just enough crunch from the almonds and sunflower seeds. These Caveman Dark Chocolate Cherry bars are labeled paleo, gluten free, dairy free, and soy free, but alas, they didn’t get the Vegan label. But, they are in fact 100% vegan. I guess Caveman doesn’t want to scare away the neanderthals.

I did also notice that Caveman labeled the palm oil in this bar as “Responsibly Sourced Palm Kernel Oil”. My wifey told me that’s becoming a big topic of discussion in the vegan community, since the planting and harvesting of palm oil causes a lot of destruction to habitats and contributes to the death of many wild animals in these habitats. There is talk in the vegan community that Palm Oil should be considered non-vegan. What do you all think?

Anyway, these are great bars. My only small gripe with these bars is that the chocolate coating doesn’t have that much flavor. Overall, Caveman makes quality vegan bars that are worth a try. And, of course, the best place to get these is on Amazon, so please use my vegan wifey’s links to do your shopping. Thanks for swinging by. Non-vegan husband out!
