If you’re like me, you love seeing more and more plant-based yogurts next to dairy yogurts in the dairy case. If there’s anywhere where plant-based is totally taking over it’s here. Between the non-dairy milks, yogurts, cream cheeses, cheeses, and sour creams, it’s almost impossible to ignore. However, that doesn’t make choosing the best plant-based products any easier. Well, lucky for you I’m a vegan dietitian and I absolutely adore helping people make positive choices.
What to look for in a non-dairy vegan yogurt:
- Low to no sugar – Aim for unsweetened varieties and add your own sugar or fruit to help sweeten it up but generally speaking the fruity flavored ones have a boat load of added sugar
- Protein – Traditionally the almond and coconut based yogurts have less protein than the soy based yogurts and if you are eating the plant-based yogurt as a dairy equivalent, aim for at least 5 grams of protein per serving.
Those are the two main things, but as we dive into the 5 best plant-based non-dairy vegan yogurts, I’ll be sure to share some more insight. Let’s do this!
5. So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut milk Yogurt Alternative – Unsweetened – 140 calories, <1 gram protein
What we love: Although the SO Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Yogurt has very little protein, the creamy consistency and tang is reminiscent of the sour cream family. I like to add lime juice and cilantro to it and use as a taco topping! Try it out with the non-dairy yogurt available here on Amazon.
Considerations: Coconut yogurt is one of the lowest protein options on the market.
4. Califia Farms Probiotic Drinkable Yogurt, Dairy Free, Vegan, Non-GMO, Super Berry – 150 calories and 3 grams of protein
What we love: Most notably, Califia Farms Drinkable yogurt is drinkable. This is great if you want to consume live active cultures in a plant-based food form but you do not want to actually sit down and eat yogurt. I love taking a swig of this vegan drinkable yogurt available on Amazon before my breakfast!
Considerations: It comes in a multi-serving bottle and is not as portable as an individual yogurt container. Also, there are only 3 grams of protein per serving.
3. Silk Almondmilk Yogurt Alternative – Dark Chocolate Coconut – 190 calories and 5 grams of protein
What we love: If you’re looking for more of a yogurt that doubles as a dessert, this Silk Almond Yogurt in Dark Chocolate Coconut is the yogurt for you! It’s rich, dark, creamy, and decadent with a subtle tang. Silk makes other almond yogurts, but this is my favorite even if it has a bit more sugar. Find this non-dairy almond yogurt on Amazon.
Considerations: It’s definitely on the sweet side and is really only great if you have a sweet tooth and you’re looking to crave that sweet tooth with some protein and healthy probiotics at the same time.
2. Silk Almondmilk Yogurt Alternative – Plain – 180 calories and 6 grams of protein
What we love: This Silk Almond milk yogurt still has sugar added but has 50% less sugar than fruited varieties and is a much better option. Feel free to add berries or frozen cherries to really make this non-dairy yogurt pop. You can try it here on Amazon!
Considerations: Just be mindful that plain does not mean the same thing as unsweetened.
1. Kite Hill Plain Unsweetened Greek Style Almond Milk Yogurt -190 calories and 11 grams of protein
What we love: Kite Hill is a newer plant-based product company but since they came onto the scene, they’ve put out some killer products like this unsweetened greek style almond yogurt that is ultra thick, creamy, and luxurious. Plus, with 11 grams of plant-based protein, it’s bound to keep you full for awhile. Kite Hill makes other great yogurts, but this Greek style unsweetened one you can find on Amazon is the ultimate in terms of nutrition and taste.
Considerations: Because you are getting nearly twice the amount of protein and essentially the yogurt is ultra drained, I do find this brand and Greek Style variety to be a few cents more expensive than the other non-dairy yogurts but I think the added protein and thick creamy consistency is totally worth it!
