You know that oats are good for you, right?! I mean, they have soluble and insoluble fiber, vitamins, minerals, and protein. Oats are a fantastic way to start your day and steel cut oats have even more nutrition as the oat kernal itself isn’t as processed so you have more intact vitamins, minerals, and nutrition! Many people prefer the nuttier texture of steel cut oats over traditional old fashioned or instant oatmeal. The only downfall?? Steel cut oats take about a half hour to cook on the stove and many people I know do not have that kind of time in the morning. That’s where Better Oats Steel Cut Microwavable Packets can come in! These single serving vegan steel cut oat packets just need to be poured into a bowl with water or milk added (the bag turns into a measuring cup if you don’t have one!) before microwaving for only a couple minutes! That’s a huge time savings for those busy chaotic mornings. So while Better Oats Steel Cut Oat packets are certainly convenient, what do they taste like and how does their nutrition stack up?! Keep reading to find out or check out Better Oats Steel Cut Oatmeal Packets on Amazon now.

Taste Experience

The Original flavor of Better Oats Steel Cut Oat Microwavable packets are not sweetened (but the maple and brown sugar steel cut oats are sweetened and also available in a single serving microwavable packet from Better Oats. With only 4 ingredients (whole grain steel cut oats, flaxseed, stearic acid, and salt), you’ll likely want to add some fruit, dried fruit, nuts, or a sweetener of choice. Personally, I enjoy being able to control how sweet my oatmeal is compared to the ready sweetened and flavored options. With that being said, if you eat the Better Oats Original Steel Cut Oats on their own, you will probably find the flavor rather bland although very dense, hearty, and whole grain satisfying. If you like unsweetened vegan breakfast options on the go, it doesn’t get much better than Better Oats Steel Cut Oats in the original flavor available HERE.

Nutrition

Each individual packet of Better Oats Steel Cut Oatmeal in the Original flavor provides 120 calories with only three grams of fat and only 1/2 gram of saturated fat. Because flaxseeds have a considerable amount of calories and healthy fat but this oatmeal packet has still on the lower end, it’s reasonable to say there there is actually very few flax seeds in the Better Oats Steel Cut Oatmeal…..which is fine, especially if you do plan on adding your own nuts, seeds, or nut butter that will help increase the fat and calorie content to help keep you full and satisfied for breakfast – otherwise you’ll probably get hungry quickly!

Since this is a 100% vegan, you won’t see any cholesterol in the steel cut oats and for having salt added, there’s only 90mg sodium per serving! This is considerably lower than I would imagine as traditional instant oatmeal packets are actually quite high in sodium with Quaker Oats Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal packing in 260mg sodium per packet! That’s more than double for no reason in my opinion. Honestly, Quaker instant oats probably have more sodium because they also add a lot more sugar and the sodium helps balance out the sweetness.

Each Better Oats Steel Cut Oatmeal packet contains a reasonable 22 grams of carbohydrate with three grams of total fiber per serving. As mentioned, the original flavor which I’m reviewing today does not have any added sugar while the Better Oats Steel Cut Oats Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal packet contains 10 grams of added sugar (Quaker Instant Oatmeal Packet in Maple and Brown Sugar contains 12 grams of added sugar). So even if you like your oatmeal sweet and you want it already sweetened for you, the Better Oats is a better option. This is especially true if you are looking for an unsweetened version that you can doll up to your liking.

With 4 grams of protein, it would be helpful to add additional protein with soy milk, nuts, seeds, or nut butters to help this oatmeal packet carry your energy and hunger from breakfast to lunch. It’s a little on the low side to stand alone and likely wouldn’t be as satisfying.

Because steel cut oats are a wholesome whole grain, there are a significant amount of trace minerals and vitamins including thiamin, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, and iron to help meet those specif micronutrient needs.

Check out Better Oats Steel Cut Oatmeal in Original or Maple and Brown Sugar today and you’ll be starting your day off to a tasty, wholesome breakfast! Both flavors are available in 10 count boxes HERE.

Parting Thoughts

If you’re looking for a wholesome, hearty, and tasty way to start your day, than look no further than Better Oats Steel Cut Oat packets in the original flavor. Definitely go for the unsweetened original flavor if you like to doll up your oatmeal a particular way but you’re still looking for a quick breakfast you can make in the microwave in a matter of minutes. On the flip side, if you want your oatmeal already sweetened and ready to go, I recommend the Maple and Brown Sugar Steel Cut Oats that are still lower in sodium and sugar than Quaker Instant Oatmeal in Maple and Brown sugar. Better Oats is also higher in protein and like any oatmeal, contains beneficial fiber. Check out Better Oats Steel Cut Oats today if you want a healthy, tasty, convenient oatmeal option on the go….this is especially true for office breakfasts or during travel times!

It would be great to do a test comparing the best non-flavored instant oatmeals. I’ve been eating McCann’s Instant Oatmeal for years (regular) but I just looked at the ingredients list and found guar gum as one of the ingredients? Really? Why can’t someone make instant oatmeal where there is only one ingredient: Oatmeal?
